Felix and Fanny
Mannes School of Music: Performance
Course Reference Number: 8169
Credits: 2
Felix Mendelssohn and his sister Fanny Hensel maintained a lifelong close personal and artistic relationship, and both wrote outstanding chamber music, solo piano works and lieder (In fact, six of Felix's published songs were actually written by Fanny). Although most of Hensel's music was unpublished during her lifetime it has now been rediscovered and acclaimed for its expressive range, formal sophistication and technical brilliance. The class will explore works by both siblings and is open to pianists, string players and singers. Groups will be formed and there will be in-class performances. Repertoire highlights include Hensel's piano trio and piano quartet, lieder and Das Jahr (a piano cycle of twelve pieces); Mendelssohn's piano trios, piano quartets, violin sonata, cello sonatas, piano sonatas and lieder.
