Fortepiano for Pianists (and strings and singers)

Mannes School of Music: Performance

Fortepiano for Pianists
Fall 2013
Taught By: Audrey Axinn
Section: A

Course Reference Number: 8162

Credits: 2

This class explores many aspects of late 18th and early 19th-century style and notational practices through playing classical repertoire on a reproduction fortepiano. The course is open to pianists and singers and will cover both solo piano repertoire and lieder by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. Studying this repertoire using a fortepiano instead of a modern piano will lead to strikingly different interpretations of works we feel we already know well. The fortepiano feels and behaves differently than a modern piano, forcing students to think deeply about tempi, phrasing, and the grammar of classical-era musical language. Its sound is also more transparent and decays far faster than a modern instrument, allowing singers to emphasize the spoken inflections and timings of German speech in their singing.
