Over the course of the semester, students will learn the basics of arranging for a small ensemble, creating and performing their own hands-on projects. Each student will arrange 3 short pieces for the ensemble, which will perform all the arrangements at a concert at the end of the course. Students will be introduced to music notation, dynamic balance, instrumental ranges and techniques specific to the ensemble, and stylistic considerations in adapting a diverse selection of music. Students will be coached on the performance of their arrangements. Throughout the course, students will be sight-reading the arrangements of their colleagues, and will be coached on their ensemble playing. By the end of the course they will be comfortable arranging a work for a diverse small ensemble, rehearsing the work and performing it.
