Music Notation 1A

Mannes School of Music: Composition

Music Notation 1A
Fall 2019
Taught By: Kyle Tieman-Strauss
Section: A

Course Reference Number: 7846

Credits: 2

How can I translate my musical ideas into notes and rhythms that performers can understand? Why does presentation matter, anyway? The first half of this yearlong course addresses these central questions by introducing composition students to basic music engraving, notation, and preparation concepts. Students will learn contemporary and historical approaches to notation and apply that knowledge to current engraving technology, including applied methods in three common programs: Sibelius, Finale, and Dorico. Students will also learn to think about printed music in the language of graphic design, with an emphasis on practical knowledge of preparing music for the musicians who will play it. The fall semester of Music Notation will focus on instrumental chamber music, and the coursework will include score study and engraving projects.
