Languages of the Body
School of Drama: Coll of Performing Arts
Course Reference Number: 7645
Credits: 2
This course is for students of any discipline at The New School interested in investigating the storytelling capacity of the body, methods of physical communication, and signs and symbols of body language as explored through the lens of contemporary mime. Students will begin by learning contemporary, narrative mime technique in the style of Broken Box Mime Theater, which will become our common class language and an entry point for body awareness, physical precision, and creative expression. The bulk of the course will be comprised of a series of “on-our-feet" games that require problem-solving, keen observation, and ensemble creativity to bring our intuitive knowledge of body language to our conscious mind. It is then that we will be able to, as a group, analyze how our bodies communicate in various environments and for various audiences, learn what we have inherited as members of our collective society, and gain insight as to how we may harness the storytelling power of our own physical life. This course welcomes students of all abilities, language backgrounds, identities, and experiences in physical exploration and/or performance. Focus will be drawn to creating an engaging, healthy, joyful ensemble culture.
