Planning and Counter-Planning in the United States (and beyond) after World War II
New School for Social Research: Anthropology
Course Reference Number: 8697
Credits: 3
This seminar begins from Michel Foucault’s proposition that critique can be studied as “a line of development of the arts of governing,” focusing on the post-World War II US, but also possibly following lines of genealogical investigation beyond the US. Initial sites of collaborative inquiry might include discourses and practices of “counter-planning” in fields such as public administration, design, political economy, and urban planning, as well as forms of expertise and specialized knowledge in these fields, such as behavioral economics, data visualization, participatory process, cognitive science, and institutional design.
