Much of the contemporary discussion of neoliberalism was catalyzed by Michel Foucault's College de France lectures, which focused on its Chicago School origins (Hayek, Becker); these lectures, however, ignore the development of derivative finance at Chicago, whose global spread consolidates neoliberalism as the dominant framework for financial capitalism. This course will trace these issues to Marx, who provided the first systematic analysis of the relationship between capitalism and the roots of neoliberalism, and then extend these insights to the contemporary rise of the ideology of neoliberalism (John Rawls and Robert Nozick) and derivative finance.  We will also look at affect theory's uses of Marxism and critiques of neoliberalism, particularly the work of Lauren Berlant and Sianne Ngai
