Money is one of the oldest economic institutions, and certainly one of the central institutions of capitalism. The course will deal with the history of money, looking at the various forms it took from its beginnings to today. It will in particular explore the politics and governance of modern fiat money -- money not covered by material values such as bullion -- with a view to the origins of "financialization" and the 2008+ financial crisis. The final sessions will discuss alternative money regimes designed to make money less crisis-prone and less bound up with surplus extraction.
