This course deepens students' appreciation of the history of cinema and explores possible ways of thinking about the moving image. By analyzing influential films from the cinematic canon, as well as theoretical approaches that have been brought to bear on that canon, students explore the complex relationship between the moving image and critical thought. The course surveys the main historical periods and movements from film history – silent cinema, the classical Hollywood film, Italian Neo-realism, the French New Wave, American Independent Cinema, and the Dogma 95 movement. The course also covers some of the major film genres, key films from various national cinemas, and select auteurs from the history of cinema. [Counts for Track S.]
