*Scenes and Subcultures* [Track C&M] This course introduces students to research on the concepts of scenes and subcultures. In the first half of the course, we examine how cultural studies and media studies scholars define scenes and subcultures and how they account for their apparent overlaps and differences. Specific attention will be paid to the impact social media platforms have had on how scenes and subcultures are experienced, defined and researched. In the second half of the course, we will turn our attention to several local scenes and subcultures, paying specific attention to historical and contemporary scenes and subcultures in New York City. In addition to reading key works by cultural studies and media studies theorists, students will carry out in depth research on the history or current development of a specific local or global scene or subculture.
