Course Reference Number: 7239
Credits: 4
This is a field based seminar in which students explore historical and contemporary approaches to educating "the whole child," in theory and in practice in the nation's public schools. Students engage in both academic readings and seminar discussion and will participate as facilitators of Healthclass2.0, an in school wellness program (www.healthclass.org) co founded by the professor. In light of their experience with HC2.0 and their interpretation of the texts, students consider questions such as: Should schools educate beyond "the 3 Rs?" Is educating for wellness a "frill," or crucial to a successful education? What kind of curriculum did John Dewey have in mind when he advocated educating "the whole child?" Who have been the winners and losers of this pedagogy? How have nutrition and physical fitness programs constructed the body and been been both empowering and limiting to students? Do such programs promote individual or systemic change? How can stakeholders such as universities, public school systems, the federal government, private enterprise, and individual citizens take on a version of "whole child" education that fundamentally shifts educational and health inequities in this country? *This seminar+ course will involve a substantial time commitment OUTSIDE of scheduled class time at public school sites TBD.
