This course will look at the history of Native American education through the theoretical and ideological frameworks of colonialism, race, and geography in19th and early 20th century America. While common perceptions of colonialism connote inter national relationships, this course will examine the ways that Eastern historical actors worked to "civilize" the West through schooling indigenous bodies. This course will look particularly at the role of missionaries in these efforts, the creation of schools for Native Americans, and the ways that race ideology shaped the formation and implementation of these schools.
