Views from the Border: Intercultural Encounters in the Arts
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: The Arts
Course Reference Number: 7195
Credits: 4
This interdisciplinary seminar looks at how geographically separated cultures have represented each other through the arts. Beginning with case studies in film, the visual arts, music, and literature from the 19th century to the present, we will examine how depictions of the other have been entangled with colonial histories, migration, and national identities. We will then think about roles the arts can play in a current era where national borders are being tightened, even as the digital realm offers increased potential for exchange. Students will have the option to do a creative final project.
