Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: Journalism & Design

Investigations
Spring 2021
Taught By: Andrew Meier
Section: AX

Course Reference Number: 8991

Credits: 4

Advanced J+D students will gain an understanding of the traditions and practice of investigative journalism through close study of published works (across a broad range of media). They will also acquire basic investigative skills in project-based learning. Case studies will focus on the criminal justice system; sexual violence; politics (including old-school fraud as well as the novel efforts to undermine civic participation). Working collaboratively, students will tackle real-life investigations and brainstorm, strategize, chart lines of inquiry and learn investigative reporting techniques. The course builds on data, design, and reporting/research skills, and is meant to prepare students to undertake a capstone project. Students will also gain exposure to the cutting-edge investigative tactics used by news outlets —as well as a range of others, from state and county agencies to private investigators. This class is strongly recommended for all Journalism + Design majors.
