Pre-College High School Workshop: Writing in the City

Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: Literary Studies

Writing in the City
Summer 2019
Taught By: Daphne Benedis-Grab
Section: A

Course Reference Number: 1001

Credits: 4

In this intensive course, students write a weekly work of fiction — cumulative or separate pieces — which we will then workshop together as a class. Each week, we also discuss and dissect one element of creating a story (such as point of view, the role of dialogue, and plot) using books on craft and works of fiction to deepen our understand and fluency with each. We have weekly excursions around the city, meant to elicit new story ideas and inspire our writing projects. This course is meant to be generative; each student completes a number of works of prose. Meets Monday through Thursday, 10:00 a.m.-3:50 p.m., with a one-hour break for lunch. Note: The first day of class is Monday, July 8, and the last day is Thursday, July 25.
