Musical Feeling
Spring 2019
Taught By: Ivan Raykoff
Section: A

Course Reference Number: 7298

Credits: 4

Why does "sad" music evoke or inspire "heartache"? How does it pull on our "heartstrings"? This course explores the relationship between emotional feeling (affect) and physical feeling (embodiment) in our experiences of making and listening to music. It addresses enduring questions about how music is expressive of moods and states of being, but approaches these aesthetic debates from the perspective of the body, asking how music moves us to experience feeling through our physical sensorium, including hearing, sight, touch, and movement. With readings from music history, psychology, sound studies, and aesthetics, the course considers the Ancient Greek concept of ethos, or music’s power over character and behavior; the Baroque-era "doctrine of the affections" that assigned expressive meanings to musical figures and forms; and the rise of modern scientific and technological approaches to how we create and react to music in embodied ways. Students will research these topics and musical case studies for papers, creative projects, and collaborative presentations; the course also includes excursions to performances and exhibits in the city.
