This course explores the relevance and complexity of emotions from both a scientific and experiential perspective. Emotions are at the center of human experience. In both humans and other animals, emotions create a bridge between self, other and the environment. Emotions are a fundamental part of communication and evolution, and manifest at different levels of experience (i.e. subjectively and physiologically). This course examines how emotions manifest in voices, facial expressions, and how they are processed by the nervous system. Diverse materials include scientific research articles, affective science textbook chapters and other media. This course consist of lectures and in-class discussions. Assignments include leading class activities, paper and exams. Prerequisite: One Lang fundamentals course, or ULEC 2160, Introduction to Psychology with a grade C, or higher.
