Digital Storytelling
Schools of Public Engagement: Communication
Course Reference Number: 6542
Credits: 0 OR 3
Narrative and documentary storytelling through film and video is now commonly transferred to a variety of small-screen media, including social media platforms, mobile devices, and multiple-platform cross-media. In this course, students begin by engaging with storytelling fundamentals, such as premise, theme, conflict, character and plot, and then develop and apply them to new media platforms. Through case studies of transmedia films, social media, blogs, Web serials, and other interactive projects, the class examines stories that unfold and connect across personal media. They then undertake a series of exercises on a number of platforms, through which they explore scene and character development, learn effective narrative techniques and structures, and develop a proposal or outline for a longer project. The class also investigates new models of funding and distribution, such as crowd sourcing and hybrid distribution strategies, that enable media makers to maintain control over their work while building their audience. By the end of the class, each student should have completed a detailed project outline along with a visual presentation.
