Editing Intensive
Schools of Public Engagement: Media Studies
Course Reference Number: 6923
This 5-day intensive workshop will cover the basics of editing with Avid Media Composer, as well as advanced techniques. After mastering the software’s interface, we will first learn how to organize clips and edit a rough cut. Advanced features are then introduced while we explore the art of crafting a story on film. Particular emphasis will be on skills used in editing documentaries; including assembly edits, spotting the sequence, audio editing, importing graphics and music, titles, and basic special effects. To practice the techniques, the students will cut several scenes; both narrative and documentary style. Key toolsets and methods will be demonstrated, discussed and used in exercises. The workshop will primarily focus on mastering the software and understanding the Avid-specific workflow. In addition, we will also discuss aesthetics of editing as related to the tools and techniques used. The Editing Intensive is a 5-day lab course from 10am to 5pm, with a one-hour lunch from 12.30 to 1.30pm. This course is only open to students taking the Graduate Certificate in Documentary Studies.
