Black nationalism has proved to be a powerful organizing concept uniting much of the global Black diaspora. This course examines the multiple rhetorical strands of black nationalism, from religious, cultural, and political organizing themes to more tangible manifestations, such as experiments in Black resettlement and other forms of social activism. Key topics include the Black Atlantic, the “Back to Africa” movements of the 19th-century Caribbean and the United States, and the intersection of Black nationalism and Black Power. Key figures discussed include Olaudah Equiano, Paul Cuffe, John Russwurm, Martin Delany, Henry McNeal Turner, W.E.B. Du Bois, Alexander Crummell, Marcus Garvey, Wallace Fard Muhammad, Kwame Nkrumah, and Malcolm X.
