Fiction Workshop: Online
Fall 2019
Taught By: Austen Osworth
Section: A

Course Reference Number: 7387

Credits: 3

This course offers students the tools to analyze fictional texts from a craft perspective, to write and share their own fictional work, and to gain experience giving and receiving peer feedback in a workshop context. We discuss core technical components of fiction, including character, dialogue, point of view, plot, and voice, often beginning our discussions with the work of writers such as Joy Williams, Kelly Link, Raymond Carver, Danielle Evans, N.K. Adjei-Brenyah, Susan Choi, and Jenny Zhang. These areas of technical expertise prompt structured writing assignments that are shared with the class for feedback, leading up to the creation of a longer project that is revised for the final assignment. The class culminates in a workshop of final pieces, as well as a discussion of the processes that guide a book from manuscript to publication.
