Typography is language made visible. In this course, students will be introduced to the history and current practice of type in various areas of communication design. Students will learn to see, understand, and manipulate the visual aspect of language as a powerful communicative tool. In this course, students will acquire an understanding of the properties of typefaces, their context and how typography helps readers read and navigate a text. Students will investigate letterform structure and type classification systems, typographic terminology, history of type and printing, principles of spacing, use of typographic contrast in composition, legibility, hierarchy, and typographic form as a tool for expression and communication. The course is complemented by Core 1: Interaction. Students will be expected to apply lessons learned from interaction to their type assignments and vice versa in order to form a working method which will be explored further in Core 2 Typography & Interaction.

Open to: Associate Degree in Communication Design majors only. Co-requisite: PACD 1110 Core 1: Interaction.
