Interior environments are defined by material dynamics that are rendered through degrees of luminosity and shadow. Integral to these perceived phenomenal relationships are the luminaires that provide and distribute light. These luminous objects carry meaning as autonomous designed forms and have an innate connection to the interior landscape within which they activate. This course examines the relationships between light, material and form that comprise a luminaire and how the physical form of the assembly, along with its gesture and material relationships may partner with interior space. Students will conduct multiple full scale experiments that explore these relationships in order to reveal the intrinsic characteristics present. For the final project students will build a full scale working prototype of a luminous object that evolves in relation to a chosen interior site. Knowledge of fabrication processes is recommended. Prior knowledge of lighting is not required.
