Writing the Environment
Schools of Public Engagement: Environmental Studies
Course Reference Number: 11827
Credits: 4
How do we tell environmental stories in an age of climate change? From words printed in books to those scrawled on city walls, we are looking for voices calling out from the Anthropocene. This workshop will expose students to some of the most dynamic, adventurous environmental fiction and nonfiction writers, while also giving students the opportunity to develop their own voices as environmental thinkers and writers. We'll look at novels, short stories, essays, memoirs, opinion writing, and investigative journalism, as well as the work of artists, designers, and filmmakers. In the process we’ll discuss the imaginative strategies deployed by leading environmental writers and seek to adapt some of those strategies in our own writing and digital storytelling. Readings will engage urgent concerns of our time, like climate change, habitat erasure, race, gender and the environment, indigeneity and sustainability, ecological disaster, and relations between humans and other life forms.
