Schools of Public Engagement: Environmental Studies

ARTSCI-Environment Lab
Fall 2022
Taught By: Ellie Irons
Section: A

Course Reference Number: 14499

Credits: 4

This course explores environmental issues at the intersection of art and science, with the goal of producing a group final project that engages the public. Students explore the critical role the arts have played in the creation of environmental awareness and sustainable communities, with a particular emphasis on performative practices, experiential art, landscape intervention, and other decommodified forms. We also examine instances of collaboration among artists, designers, scientists, and engineers that have resulted in new and challenging creative works. As we collaborate to develop our own project, we consult scientific experts and literature to inform our making process. Outcomes could include a publication, web site, exhibit, performance, or any number of other formats. Students need not be artists or scientists to take this course. All that is required is curiosity and a willingness to dive in and take risks.
