Freedom Cities: Black Geographies and Social Activism
Schools of Public Engagement: Environmental Studies
Course Reference Number: 11989
Credits: 4
This course is for students who would like to explore key texts in Black urban studies and planning, and who would like to apply these texts to an exploration of NYC-based, real time efforts at building the beloved community. Students will develop a conceptual “toolkit” for how to understand contemporary urban resistance projects (housing and environment) led by local grassroots activists grappling with ongoing histories of displacement, erasure and marginalization. Learning from local projects which intervene in capitalist space-making, students will spend time exploring different sites of connection and cooperation (via local and archival fieldwork), coming away with clear working theories about how New Yorkers continue to create urban revolution.
