What do people learn in the course of struggle? Where does that knowledge live? What social relations and political subjectivities are produced as we endeavor to transform the world, and what is their significance to what we might understand as pedagogies of liberation? Perhaps most importantly, how do we learn from and build upon the histories and lessons of liberatory struggle? This course will take up these questions through an examination of case studies of organizing and social movements that span space, time, and scale. We will learn about the context in which they emerged as well as their theories of power and change. More than what they won or did not win, we will study the why and how of these movements—their pedagogies—to better understand their theories and methodologies of political education and social transformation. Throughout, our inquiry will examine how various theories of power and change translate to action, organizational form, and knowledge-making, and vice versa. We will also address the role of various factors in liberatory struggle: identity, rights, the state, autonomy, prefiguration, scale, and solidarity.
