This course examines borders as sites of political struggle and laboratories for political innovation. Our focus for Fall 2023 will be the deportability-mobility-continuum that operates across the US-Mexico border, read in comparative perspective with similar dynamics elsewhere in the world. At a theoretical level, we will examine the institutions, policies, political-economies, and narratives that sustain this continuum. On a concrete level, we will engage with the experiences of those who are directly affected by border enforcement, including deportation, and who are working to resist it. We will focus specifically on the work of transnational networks of deportees, returnees, and undocumented youth who are creating alternative narratives and challenging conceptual frameworks for borders and migration that do not reflect their experiences, needs, and aspirations. We will also consider the university as an institutional battleground for this specific form of border politics and reflect on ourselves as scholar-activists within this context. The course will be a collaboration between students at The New School and activists and artists affiliated with Otros Dreams en Acción (ODA) in Mexico City. Students will participate in co-organizing events and creating a collective project to support two of ODA’s campaigns: 1) the visa justice mobility campaign, and 2) the Flourishing Here and There artistic interventions.
