This course examines the concept and practice of accompaniment as part of contemporary sanctuary movements. The course provides students with an understanding of the history and policy context of sanctuary movements in which accompaniment has emerged as an organizing principle, as well as the range of actors and institutions involved, from immigration authorities and courts, to religious and secular organizations, and transnational organizing networks. The course exposes students to specific practices associated with accompaniment in local and transnational settings, including the accompaniment of migrants to New York court proceedings, and the accompaniment of migrants who are deported or returned across transnational borders. By partnering with organizations engaged in the work of accompaniment, the course engages students in the question of whether and how accompaniment represents a novel social practice and what its ongoing implications might be for alternative political futures. After the first week of the semester, permission of the instructor will be required in order to register for this course.
