Gender & Global Capitalism
Spring 2022
Taught By: Laura Y Liu
Section: A

Course Reference Number: 11822

Credits: 3

This course examines gender under conditions of global capitalism. We will look at how the institutions, structures, and cultures of global capitalism both shape and are shaped by gender, as well as sexuality, race, national identity, class, migration status, ability, and other forms of social difference. Using socio-spatial theories, we examine how forces of globalization organize and reproduce hierarchies of power across multiple spheres of social life. These theories span feminist, queer, decolonial, abolitionist and other approaches. Topics we will consider include: global production and gendered work; reproductive labor and care; the informal economy; sex work and tourism; militarization and war; migration and displacement; trade and economic restructuring; popular culture and global media; among others. Across these topics, we will look at how the dynamics of gender and global capitalism structure people’s daily lives, the institutions they move through, and the places they live.
