Through a consideration of classic and contemporary texts, this course examines the many ways that “design”—conceived broadly to include any intentional plan, process, or product—can influence individuals’ sense of identity and possibility, structures and systems of social organization, and the expression of political power. Readings reflect a range of philosophical, psychological, and political perspectives, but all share a focus on material aspects of contemporary, technologically-intensive societies.
Students must register for both the lecture and discussion section of this course.
