School of Drama: Creative Arts and Health
Course Reference Number: 7823
Credits: 0 OR 3
The object of this course is to develop basic knowledge of art therapy. Art therapy is the therapeutic use of art. This occurs through the creation of visual images that constitute symbolic equivalents for experiences, feelings thoughts, and fantasies. Through the use of these symbolic images clients are helped to perceive, identify, define, and communicate their conscious and unconscious conflicts by projecting them outside themselves. Students will learn through experientials, techniques, and theories how art is used as a therapeutic tool to evoke expression, and how to create a safe working environment.
