Baroque Chamber Ensembles
Mannes School of Music: Historical Performance
Course Reference Number: 5249
Credits: 0 OR 1
This course is designed for singers and instrumentalists interested in performing 17th- and 18th-century ensemble music. Emphasis will be on exploration of both familiar and unusual repertoire, techniques of good ensemble playing, detailed understanding of Baroque performance practice (tempo, articulation, phrasing and ornamentation), and learning to play music of the Baroque period in a stylish and historically-informed way. Participants should have at least basic sight reading skills. There will be performance opportunities throughout the semester; concerts in recent years have featured works by Bach, Handel, Telemann, Couperin, Purcell, Monteverdi, Marin Marais, and Luzzasco Luzzaschi. Instrumentalists and singers will work together on pieces in small ensembles; exact repertoire will be determined by the makeup of each ensemble. The class is open to musicians who play standard modern orchestral instruments and also to those who play “period” instruments such as recorder, Baroque flute, or viola da gamba. Ensembles are formed with consideration of instrumentation, scheduling availability, and musical background/experience (please note that in some cases not all students can be accommodated). Group placement auditions will be held the first week of the semester. Contact Mannes NEXT (mannesnext@newschool.edu or 212.580.0210 x4802) for more information.
