Further study of material presented in Theory 2 in two areas: harmony and counterpoint. Students analyze and write using chromatic techniques found in the late Romantic repertoire of Wagner, Mahler, Strauss, and their contemporaries. Focus is on use of extended chords, chromatic alteration, and modulation to remote key areas. Counterpoint studies focus on combining the various species of simple counterpoint into one exercise, developing the student’s ability to control three levels of rhythmic activity and dissonance treatment simultaneously. This culminates in an introduction to imitative counterpoint. Pre-requisite: XTOM2002 or by placement exam. Placement exams are held prior to the start of each semester. Contact the Extension Office at mannesextension@newschool.edu or 212.580.0210 x4802 for placement exam scheduling.
