What is a Curator? What is the Public? What Is an Exhibition? Why mediate Art and Design ? What to do with the Past? with the Contemporary? with the Foreign? What about Collecting and the Market? How about Responsibility? and Pleasure? Over the last decades, exhibitions have become prime vehicles for intellectual, cultural and socio-political expression. Along with them, a plethora of publications have appeared on the topic. Curating is a relatively young field with short history. It certainly borrows from the more established disciplines of art history and cultural studies, but it is still in its adolescence, still transitioning from an open, creative, largely undefined practice to a global and diverse professional arena, that requires a strong political, social and cultural awareness from its practitioners. To prepare students for a career in the curatorial field by familiarizing them, through in-class practicum and individual assignments, with some of the foundation concepts and daily tasks encountered in curatorial departments. The course will introduce students to standard exhibition practices associated with the acquisition, information management, collection management, and exhibition of objects. This course will familiarize and improve the student’s skills in cataloguing, critical analysis, and a range of writing styles employed in the curatorial field. Development of agile thinking and writing skills will be encouraged by active class discussion, group verbal exercises, and small team or individual writing assignments executed in limited time spans. This course is composed of lectures, recitations, field trips and guest lectures with museum and exhibition professionals. It will present past and contemporary issues in Exhibition theory and practice. It will also provide students with a space in which they will develop their own curatorial ideas and practice.
