What is the role of objects and material culture in shaping social relations? How is the meaning and the value of objects created in different societies and places? What commodities have to say about collective and individual identities? How does a place participates in the way people experience relationships between one another ? How does globalisation affect our sense of place ? In this course, students will explore the role of design and material culture in the process of affirming or negotiating sex, gender, class, race and nationality issues in our globalised world. We will discuss key ideas from anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, politics, philosophy, geography, gender studies, critical race studies and critical theory. We will also visit cultural institutions such as museums in which these issues can be experienced first-hand. The end goal of the course is for young designers to contextualise their practice and their position within these crucial issues of our contemporary world. Open to: ALL UG Students
