This module addresses the social and political dimensions of the present climate crisis using the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. We chart the history of development and sustainability to provide a context. We will examine defining features of the concept of sustainable development, introducing various perspectives such as systems thinking, social justice and agents for social change. We will see how local and global environmental risks demand new forms of urban, national and international governmentality. The module will introduce the social dimensions of ecology such as how social inequality, social justice, and cultural structures affect and are affected by changes in the natural environment. Finally, we allow students to explore new possibilities of social, cultural and environmental change. Throughout the module, we will research and look at the activities of organisations and movements involved in environmental sustainability. This module aims to empower learners with the confidence and understanding to be able to scrutinize, push for stronger action and hold governing bodies accountable in address the current climate crisis issues. As a Without climate and sustainability literacy we cannot mitigate against and or prepare communities for climate change. This module empowers learners to locate the opportunities to address climate change using creative solutions.
