Students are immersed in the fundamentals of preparation of operatic roles and ensembles by studying both the musical and dramatic aspects of arias and scenes drawn from a wide variety of operatic literature. Intensive musical preparation including individual coaching and acting techniques featuring monologue work and /or other acting techniques are hallmarks of this course. The course will culminate with a public performance of opera scenes studied in class. Students’ technical abilities are carefully coordinated with class role and ensemble assignments. Classwork is supplemented by masterclasses led by eminent professionals in the opera world centering on the musical, dramatic and/or business aspects of opera. This a full year course organized from the fall through the spring semesters.
