The course will explore and analyze seven masterworks of the orchestral repertoire of the twentieth century, representing some major composers and compositional styles of the period. Focus will be on the basic musical features of each work: structure and form, harmonic language, orchestration, etc. Each work will be seen in context of its times, within the composer’s total output, its precedents, and its influence. Study of the scores will be supplemented with selected recordings of the works under study. Works to be studied: Debussy, La mer (1905); Stravinsky, Le sacre du printemps (1913); Hindemith, Symphony Mathis der Maler (1934); Webern, Symphonie, Op. 21 (1928), Prokofiev, Symphony No. 5, Op. 100 (1944), Bartok, Concerto for Orchestra (1945), Copland, Appalachian Spring (1944).
