Gabrielli and Beyond

From before J.S Bach and onwards, composer-performer collaborators have always engaged history as they look to the future. This seminar course, open to composers and cellists, will continue this living, breathing tradition by fostering a highly collaborative environment for performance and composition. For composers, the seminar offers an opportunity to creatively wrestle with musical form and instrumental technique through the ages. For cellists, the course offers an immersion in performance practice issues and insight into the compositional process and exposure to new musical languages.Gabrielli’s seven Ricercar for solo cello, the precursors to Bach’s Cello Suites, will serve as a starting place for cellists and composers to come together to discuss, analyze, and interrogate performance practice and interpretation. Then, through a collaborative and reflective process that takes these works as source material, composers will create new companion solo works for the cello. Composers and cellists will have the opportunity to work in collaboration to workshop and refine these new works. The class will culminate in a concert of the world premieres alongside performances of the original Gabrielli Ricercar works. Composers must have prior permission from their studio teacher in order to enroll in this course and will be asked to provide written consent at the first class in order to finalize enrollment.
