Beethoven and Beyond

This course, open to composers, cellists, and pianists, will center on the five Beethoven Sonatas for Cello and Piano, which will be studied, performed, and used as the launching pad for new works for the cello/piano duo. For composers, the seminar offers an opportunity to creatively wrestle with musical form and instrumental technique through the ages. For cellists, the course offers an immersion in performance practice issues and insight into the compositional process and exposure to new musical languages. Beethoven's five path breaking Sonatas will serve as a starting point for cellists and composers to come together to discuss, analyze, and interrogate performance practice and interpretation and balance between the two disparate instruments. Then, through a collaborative and reflective process that takes these works as source material, composers will create new works for the cello/piano duo. Composers, cellists, and pianists will have the opportunity to work in collaboration to workshop and refine these new works. The class will culminate in a concert of the world premieres alongside performances of the original Beethoven Sonatas. Composers must have prior permission from their studio teacher in order to enroll in this course and will be asked to provide written consent at the first class in order to finalize enrollment. This course can be used to satisfy the Chamber Music requirement for Mannes piano majors.
