Beginning With Bach

Spring 2020

Taught By: Jennifer Koh

Section: A

CRN: 6409

Credits: 2

Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin are still considered a pinnacle of music written for solo violin. Bach’s works have also historically served as a beginning point of inspiration for composers. This course will include the study and performance of a complete Bach Sonata or Partita. Additional elements of this course will include listening assignments and score study of 20th and 21st century works for solo violin written in direct connection to solo Bach. The composers that will be explored will include, but are not limited to works by Bartok, Berio, Mazzoli, Saariaho, and Salonen. Students will also learn at least a movement or complete piece of a minimum of 10 minutes of one of the new works. The course will include a mid-semester public masterclass; and an end of semester performance of the Bach Sonata or Partita. By group audition on the first meeting date. Interested students should register to be considered for one of the three seats in the course.
