"This seminar course, open to composers and cellists, is based on the living, breathing tradition of performer/composer collaborations. For composers, the seminar offers an opportunity to creatively wrestle with musical form and instrumental technique as it applies to new work. For cellists, students have one foot in the old, and one in the new: cellists will immerse themselves in the learning and performance of a selected cello suite, while collaborating with a composer on the creation of a new work that takes the Bach suite as its starting point. The Cello Suites will serve as a starting place for cellists and composers to come together to discuss, analyze, and interrogate performance practice and interpretation. Then, through a collaborative and reflective process that takes these works as source material, composers will create new companion solo works for the cello. Composers and cellists will have the opportunity to work in collaboration to workshop and refine these new works. The class will culminate in a concert of the world premieres alongside performances of the Bach suites. Some works from the class may also be selected for performance at the Bach Cello Suites Workshop in Albany in July 2020. Composers must have prior permission from their studio teacher in order to enroll in this course. "
