"This chamber course is designed to expose a wide range of performance practices and knowledge to Mannes’ community of brass musicians. Through a mixture of performative work and research, the class addresses various types of repertoire for forces, from solo to larger ensemble including brass trio, quintet, sextet, etc. The development of ensemble sound and musicality in all contexts is the core goal. Chamber Brass Workshop approaches brass music from historical, contemporary, and varied cultural perspectives, developing an inclusive understanding of the immense possibilities available to the 21st century brass practitioner. Composers on the agenda include James Tenney, Iannis Xenakis, Julius Eastman, Luciano Berio, Zeena Parkins, Alvin Etler, Lucia Dlugoszewski, John King, Anthony Braxton, Ingram Marshall, David del Tredici, Anthony Davis, Lois Vierk, and Anthony Coleman. Chamber Brass Workshop is taught by trombonist Chris McIntyre, Co-Founder and Director of Brooklyn-based TILT Brass and a Mannes alum. A leading figure in contemporary music, McIntyre is active as a performer, composer, curator, and producer.
