Music Since 1985

Spring 2019

Taught By: Luciano Chessa

Section: A

CRN: 7735

Credits: 2

Taught by renowned composer and scholar Luciano Chessa, "Music Since 1985" consists of in-class conversations, debates, presentations, listening, score analysis, readings, writing assignments and group projects designed to expose students to some of the main trends of the last 30 years of music. Eleven targeted composers (Ellen Fullman, Olga Neuwirth, Kaija Saariaho, Joan la Barbara, Pamela Z, Aleksandra Vrebalov, Pauline Oliveros, Ashley Fure, Galina Ustvolskaya, Maryanne Amacher, Eliane Radigue) and their backgrounds (cultural, spiritual, ethnic), will serve as departure points for conversations intended to address such issues as musical style, notation, performance practice, marketing of New Music, what makes for artistic and commercial success, etc. Please notice that for this class Professor Chessa plans to replace the standard “lecture” format with discussions, debates. Every week the students are expected to carry on a discussion of the work of a different targeted composer according to the calendar and syllabus. For that purpose, the instructor will serve as a discussion moderator. The students will need to become familiar with the work of the assigned composers by first listening their music and reading about their work before coming to class.
