Music and Culture of Iceland
Mannes School of Music: Music History and Literature
CRN: 13864
Credits: 2
The main focus is on classical music by Icelandic composers today. We will investigate its precedent in music of the last century (especially by Jón Leifs) as well as cross-stylistic currents with Björk and other major figures in contemporary popular, rock, jazz and folk music. Some mention will be made of other arts (especially film and literature) as well as the influence of Icelandic language, history, landscape, and politics on contemporary Icelandic music. All students will be required to write a medium-length research paper at midterm, with revisions supervised by the instructor. The final project will be either an oral presentation or a performance. Other work will include weekly reading, listening, watching, and score study. Ability to read music is required. Open to all TNS grad students, and to upperclass undergrads by permission of instructor. This course fulfills the requirement for Graduate Seminar for MM students.
