A comprehensive look at Philip Glass’s masterwork “Music in Twelve Parts,” composed in 1971-74 for his own seven-member ensemble of keyboards, winds and voice. Taught by multi-woodwinds player Andrew Sterman and vocalist/keyboardist Lisa Bielawa, both members of the Philip Glass Ensemble since 1992, the course will cover: formal musical analysis, performance practice and musical/cultural context of this seminal early work. Opportunities to participate through playing/singing, as well as guest appearances by other members of the PGE. This course fulfills the requirement for Graduate Seminar for MM students.
