A one-semester course analyzing the musical, dramatic, historical, and literary features of three major works of the century, including style, form, musical language, orchestration, vocal treatment, background, and influences--past and future. The course will also explore the setting of the language, source and treatment of the libretto, and, in the case of The Rake’s Progress, the composer’s collaboration with the librettists—the poet W. H. Auden and the writer Chester Kallman. This course fulfills the requirement for Graduate Seminar for MM students.
