Experimental Composition is a composition studio class that focuses on the intersection of music with sound arts, a fluid discipline that connects to such time-based art forms as sound sculpture/installation, concrete/sound poetry, and performance art. This course comes from the desire of offering students an additional set of valuable skills as they enter in a professional world of art curators, galleries and museums whose time-based art-related interests and needs have been increasing considerably. Through individual mentorship, the students will first gain experience of this field by aid of tailored readings, written analysis/critique of classic Sound Arts works by Russolo, Cangiullo, Avraamov, Schwitters, Chopin, Ono, Lockwood, Lucier, Oliveros, Acconci, De Marinis, Sciola, Maceda, Trimpin, Schneeman, Nauman, Giorno, Cardiff, Swartz, and others, and will then gain an understanding of the field’s current developments through Galleries and Museums visits. Having completed reading and writing requirements, and having submitted a final project proposal, the class will culminate in individual students’ composition/sound arts performance/showcase events. The class contemplates the design of new interfaces, instruments, installations, be they mechanical or electro-acoustic, analog or digital; non-western or western-infused, and inspired by an aesthetic of inclusion.
