Improvisational Artists Lab

Spring 2022

Taught By: Fay Victor

Section: A

CRN: 9533

Credits: 2

The course familiarizes students with useful strategies of the improvisational process gleaned from a performers perspective both for use in improvisational performance and as a rehearsal tool for structuring more fixed creative outcomes. Through weekly improv assignments performed in class, class discussion, guest artist lectures and outside viewing and listening assignments students will be expected to develop their ability to improvise in multi-disciplinary contexts. Through weekly explorations students will refine their ability to communicate ideas in spontaneous contexts. Using music/text interplay, personal narratives, unconventional instrumentation and movement, students will move from short to longer form presentations and from traditional drama/music underscoring to more uncharted relationships between the two forms. Personal improvisatory skills for use in creative rehearsal process as well as spontaneous group interactions will be emphasized. Acceptance into the course is subject to the instrumental balance required for the class’s successful ensemble interaction and will be determined at the discretion of the instructors.
